Dry Skin Food - What Works?

Dry skin is one of the biggest problems in skin care today beside acne. Our skin loses moisture and the internal system basically broke down. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and it is recognizable by its tight, rough feel and its dull appearance. Most often, dry skin appears as scaly cracks in your face, hands, arms and legs.

It may be small comfort for you to know that dry skin affects at least one in five people. The medical name for normal dry skin is called xerosis. A more severe form of dry skin known as ichthyosis.

Unknown to many, dry skin is helped more from the inside out. That means, with the right intake of the proper nutrients into your body and skin, the chances of your dry flaky skin disappearing becomes better.

One has to nourish the skin with proper food. Flaxseed oil is very beneficial skin food and is commonly available in most health food stores. The prices are not steep and consuming this type of food will keep your dry skin moist. There are many ways you can add flaxseed into your diet. An easy way to start is to sprinkler a bit of the seeds onto your cereals or add them as seasonings toppings to other snacks.

Another skin food to try for dry skin is yogurt. Consuming yogurt regularly as part of your diet, your skin will turn out to be smoother and clearer. Yogurt is easy to take in for most people but be sure to opt for the low fat and natural flavors ones if you are conscious about sugar levels like me.

Foods high in protein, vitamins and minerals are nourishing to dry skin and can help them heal more quickly. Try to opt for a daily diet of natural raw whole foods that is rich in vitamins and minerals. For example, grape seed oil contains the vitamins minerals needed to restore your skin's vitality and continuous intake of this seed oil can help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Alternatively, try pumpkin seed oil which is a good choice if you want to build up the level of zinc in your body, as you may already know, zinc is recognized to be beneficial to our skin. Seaweed is rich in minerals and its enzymes are able to strengthen our skin's structure.

Drinking fruit juices also provides good sources of vital vitamins and minerals. It aids digestions and orange or apple juices are a good way to start the day as well. The vitamin C in some of these juices can help to rejuvenate your skin and makes them looks brighter.

Food supplements are helpful for those who think they lacked the necessary nutrients in their normal diet. There is a huge variety of health supplements that caters to skin problems. Try evening primrose oil or zinc supplements if you think you need a further boost for your skin.

Within 2-4 weeks of starting on those supplements, or swapping to more nutritious food, you should be able to notice dramatic improvement in your dry skin. With the right mix of nutrition and regular exercise, your skin is sure to stay more energetic and lively than ever.
